Like the saying goes, “Things don’t always work out the way we want them to, but they have their own way of working out.  And sometimes they work out better than we ever imagined.”  That’s what happened here with Selena Gomez.

In her new documentary My Mind & Me, Selena opens up about her high-profile split from Justin Bieber.  Selena and Justin first met in 2009, quickly hitting it off and becoming close friends.  The two went public in 2011 and called it quits, for the first time, in November of 2012.  In April of 2013, Jelena was back together, and continued with an on-again, off-again relationship until 2018.

“Everything was so public.  I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of. Then I just moved past it, and I wasn’t afraid anymore,” Selena says in the doc.  “I feel like I had to go through the worst possible heartbreak ever and then just forgetting everything at the drop of the hand, it was really confusing.  But I just think that needed to happen and ultimately it was the best thing that ever happened to me,” she continues.

In 2019 Selena released two, Justin-inspired tracks – ‘Lose You to Love Me’ and ‘Look at Her Now.’  Following the release of ‘Lose You to Love Me,’ Selena shared, “I text Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter and said, ‘I think I’m ready to just say I’m sad.’  We wrote the song in 45 minutes. The fastest song I’ve ever written.”

“It’s about more than a lost love.  It’s me learning to choose myself, to choose life, but also hoping that people can find grace and peace in that too. The song is about knowing that you completely lost every part of who you are just to rediscover yourself again,” she added.  ‘Lose You to Love Me’ became Selena’s first No.1 single on the Billboard charts.
