I still can’t believe it’s been 15 years since Rihanna released ‘Pon De Replay!’

To celebrate this major music accomplishment, Rihanna shared a heartfelt message to the fans on the gram:

 

“#15YearsOfRihanna Thank you for all the love on this hashtag today! Man this is trippy. Feels like just yesterday I was shaking in the hallways of Def Jam waiting to audition for Jay.  ‘Pon de Replay’ is where it all began … 15 years later and I’m here because God led me to you, and you guys have held me up, supported me, tolerated me, loved me, kept it too real with me, and we gon always be connected because of that! I love you Navy, and I cherish you.  I’m so grateful to be gifted you as my fans and family.”

‘Pon De Replay’ was released on May 25, 2005 and reached No. 2 on the Billboard chart.  Altogether, Rihanna has scored 14 No. 1 singles and according to People, “She has earned more Hot 100 No. 1 hits than any other artist this century.  She is also Spotify’s most-streamed female artist.”

 

 

Talking with Vulture, Rihanna confessed that after debuting ‘Pon De Replay,’ many industry execs said she’d be a ‘one hit wonder,’ “I got that a lot…but I worked my hardest to prove them wrong. And when we came out with the second album, ‘SOS’ and ‘Unfaithful’ both blew up!” she explains.

Musically, we haven’t heard much from Rihanna.  Her last album, Anti, was released in 2016 and earlier this year, she teamed up with PARTYNEXTDOOR on ‘Believe It.’  In the November issue of Vogue, Rihanna hinted that she had been working on a new album, “I like to look at it as a reggae-inspired or reggae-infused album.  It’s not gonna be typical of what you know as reggae. But you’re going to feel the elements in all of the tracks.”

 

 

‘Pon De Replay’ is off Rihanna’s debut album, Music of the Sun, which also features ‘If It’s Lovin’ That You Want,’ ‘You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No)’ with Vybz Kartel and ‘Rush’ with Kardinal Offishall.
