Joined by Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter and producers The Roommates, Selena Gomez breaks down the process behind, ‘Boyfriend,’ in ‘Beat x Beat’ video.

At the beginning, Selena reveals, “It wasn’t really any sort of inspiration other than, ‘all right, let’s have fun.’  Julia texted me and said, ‘what’s the vibe today? What’s the mood that you’re in?’ I said, ‘like I don’t know.  I want a boyfriend.  I just said that because I think I’m in a place that I’m excited for the future.  I don’t know, like I’m okay to that.  We wanted it to be very simple, but also just have this rhythmic flow to it where it just kind of make you involve your head around.”

Justin adds, “Once the main spark comes and that spark came from Selena’s text to Julia, and everything just kind starts flowing.  Definitely wanted that conversational feeling in the choruses and have everything feel minimal and cool and sexy.  I was really adamant about making sure we went into the whole thing, I want versus the need because I don’t think anyone should need a significant other of any kind.”

Julia shares, “The Roommates played this track and it was just this cool baseline.”

The Roommates then chimed in about the production, “It was really the writing and the idea, the story and the concept that kind of moved it along, and the production grew over weeks, but the writing stayed the same.  It’s a lot of tiny things all playing the role, so it makes a very tight cohesive sound.  This song is so like, whimsical and we didn’t want it to be serious, and it was just fun.  I think I just told Selena, ‘The songs done, can you laugh?'”
