This month’s ‘One To Watch’ artist is 22-year old UK native, Mabel!

Music definitely runs in Mabel’s bloodline.  Mabel is the daughter of producer Cameron McVey, who has previously worked alongside All Saints, Portishead, Massive Attack, and the Sugababes.  Mabel’s mother, is a ‘cross-generational’ superstar whose name is Neneh Cherry.

Mabel was born in the mountains of Malaga, Spain and throughout her childhood, along with her sisters, traveled from place to place.  From Notting Hill to Stockholm, Sweden, it was there that Mabel studied at the prestigious Rytmus Musikergymnasiet music school (some of its alumni includes pop icon Robyn and Tove Lo.)  Growing up, Mabel considered herself as a loner, “I didn’t have many friends growing up. I wasn’t into other kids that much. I used to hate when adults would leave me alone. I would already know that we didn’t have the same chemistry, I almost feel like I didn’t have the innocence of being a child in that sense.”  It was then Mabel found love for music.

Back in September of 2015, Mabel quietly released her first single, ‘Know Me Better,’ onto her personal SoundCloud account.  It wasn’t long until fans picked up on Mabel’s infectious R&B vibes that slowly made her the rising pop sensation that she is today.  In 2017, Mabel released  a track called ‘Finders Keepers.’  Not only did the single reach platinum status but, it also spent five weeks in the top 10 and also earned Mabel her first BRIT Award nomination for ‘Critics’ Choice.’

While at the Rytmus Musikergymnasiet, Mabel explored in songwriting and turned her life experiences into music.  She would later release her debut mixtape, ‘Ivy To Roses,’ a ‘collection of songs that explore control in modern relationships.’  Since the release of ‘Finders Keepers’ and ‘Ivy To Roses,’ Mabel has toured alongside Harry Styles, performed sold-out shows (including London’s Brixton Academy) and will release her debut-studio album, High Expectations on July 12!

From the beginning of her career, Mabel has managed to accumulate over two million single sales in the UK, over a half a billion streams and she has ‘emerged as one of the UK’s most positive, candid lyrical voices.’  Earlier this year, she dropped ‘Don’t Call Me Up,’ a record written by Mabel herself and Steve Mac (Ed Sheeran, Years & Years).  The record officially reached platinum status and is a global hit.

And beginning in August, Mabel will embark on a North American, 6-date tour.  The tour kicks off on August 12 and will wrap on the 20th in L.A.

As Mabel explains, “I hate the expression ‘finding yourself’ but I do feel like that’s what I’ve been doing. I can’t please everyone but I can create something that makes me happy, and that’s the most important thing. This is just the beginning.”
And in case you were wondering, Mabel does know how to speak fluent Swedish.  Check her out below singing ‘Old Town Road’ … and in Swedish!
