Talk about keeping it real! In the latest issue of British Vogue, Zayn Malik is opening up about One Direction.

Despite being apart of the boyband for five years along with members Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, Zayn claims he didn’t make any friends within that time, “I have always been a bit like that, though – always a bit of an island.  I don’t like to confer with too many people.”

Zayn always spoke about his rise to fame with 1D, “We went from theatres to arenas to stadiums – there was never any sort of bridge between, just boom, boom, boom.  I guess that kind of progression to any mind – but especially when you’re 17, 18 – it kind of affects you a little bit.  People take it different ways – especially when there are five different personalities.  The relationships had broken apart.”

In March of 2015, Zayn announced to the world that he was officially leaving 1D and his reasoning, “I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year old who is able to relax and some private time out of the spotlight.”  At that time, he called Liam, Harry, Louis and Niall his ‘friends for life’ and well, unfortunately, that all changed.  In British Vogue Zayn explains that he doesn’t talk to any of his former bandmates, “I ain’t spoke to any of them for a long time, to be honest with you.  That’s just the way it is.  There’s things that happen and things that were said after I left,  Snide things.  Same things that I would never have expected.”

Although the band officially separated in 2016, creator Simon Cowell told Entertainment Tonight that he still hopeful that the band will find their way back together, “I just think the legacy is too big not to back to at one point.  Plus, they have enough songs.  I didn’t realize how many hit they’ve had.  When they get back together, it will be a huge event.  But look, they’re all doing their own thing and they’re all being successful.  But I have a feeling it will happen.  I really do.  I’d love it to happen.”

So what is Zayn up to these days?  He’s a solo artist and back together with long-time girlfriend, Gigi Hadid.  Zayn says, “Everything is great.  She’s super-organized and I’m really not.  It helps that she can get things together for me a little bit.  I lean on her a lot.”
