Blame it on the alcohol! Well in this case, Sam Smith is.

He says it all started with some tequila in his pocket that Sam Smith managed to make a tiny mistake at the 88th Academy Awards (he won ‘best original song’ for the James Bond-Spectre theme, ‘Writings on the Wall’).

Sam Smith visited The Ellen Show and admitted to misquoting Ian McKellan during his acceptance speech, saying that the actor from Lord of the Rings once said ‘no openly gay man had previously won an Oscar’.  Later on, a reporter had informed Sam that Howard Ashman, who was openly gay and previously won best original song at the Oscars.  Sam replied with, “I should know him.  We should date.”

Sam continues, “I wasn’t happy with my performance and we thought we had no chance of winning at all. I was just like, ‘Let’s get the party started and have some fun.  Then we won and I was just like, ‘Woah.’ And I went up and I mucked up my speech. I forgot to say best male actor. I basically said I was the first gay person to ever win an Oscar.”  He then revealed to Ellen, “I saw Elton John at an after party and he was like, ‘I’ve won an Oscar.’ I was like, ‘I’m sorry. I was young when you won your Oscar.’ I’m joking.”

Afterwards, Ellen changed the subject from Oscars to love and asked if Sam was single.  Weeks ago cameras spotted Sam with Brand Flynn, star of the hit Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why.

“No, I’m not, which is crazy.  It’s weird bringing out an album and not being single. Because when I brought out In the Lonely Hour, I was so lonely. But now I’m singing songs about another guy, but now I’m quite happy. So it’s quite weird,” answers Sam.

The best part, Ellen scares Sam not once but TWICE during their interview.

Ellen scared Sam twice in one minute and in between both scares, Sam points to the box that’s next time him and says, “I thought it was going to come out of this.  I was waiting for it to come out of this.” Moments later, a ghost pops up.

During this part of the interview, Sam and Ellen discuss Sam’s new house that he recently purchased and he told Ellen how he thinks it’s haunted (it’s 300 years old and it was once a school).  “I have a good relationship with the ghosts. Sometimes at night, I get up and I’m like ‘Leave me alone and they do. I feel like if you talk to it and you’re like, ‘Please, I just need to sleep.”

Sam’s new album The Thrill Of It All drops Nov. 3.
