The coming out process is always nerve racking and stressful on both the parents and the child coming out.

In the case of Giselle and Alan, when two of their 3 kids came out they thought it was cool! “I thought, the first two times, oh this is cool I can tell my friends and it’s something that’s different and it makes us an interesting and unique family,” said mom Giselle.

Things then changed again for the Bloch family – the full timeline is this: Lucas came out as a lesbian at age 18, then two years later the middle son Brandon came out as gay at age 18, and then two years later Lucas came out as a trans man at age 22.

“The third time I thought of myself, and went through a grieving process, until I realized that Lucas was the same person he was before, just in a different package,” Giselle explained.

When Lucas came out first as a lesbian he felt a lot better about who he was as a person, but it wasn’t enough as he explains, “It didn’t feel like me, I still wasn’t my true self. It took me a number of years to finally come to terms with and accept that I am trans.”

Brandon feels this all brought the family closer, “I think the fact that we can be so open and honest kicked off this idea that we don’t have to keep anything form each other, especially not things that are so important to the way you want to live your life.”

Giselle adds this bit of advice, “If parents can take the time to realize that they love their kids more then they love their believes then they can probably make it work.”

This loving mom also got a tattoo, “It says ‘unconditional love knows no limits’ and I believe that we’ve shown that, we’ve proven that, and our kids know that too.”
