Missy Elliott Talks New Music, Admiration for Michelle Obama & More!

Originally Aired: January 27, 2017

Missy admitted that when she first heard the beat for ‘I’m Better’, she was a little unsure,

“It was scary because the sound was familiar, and I was so used to hearing something that was not so familiar, so it was like ‘Hmmm, I dunno’, so then once I started rapping on it, it started feeling like ‘Ok, this is still Missy.”

If there is one signature to Missy Elliott it’s her elaborate music videos and for this one, Missy did something she’s never done before,

“We took a month to rehearse for this video…I’ve never done that in my whole career…we rehearsed from 9pm to 6am until we was about to fight each other after the third week.”

The music video for ‘I’m Better’ sees Missy team up with long-time collaborator, director Dave Meyers (‘Get Ur Freak On’‘Lose Control’ and ‘Work It’) who she admits is a bit of “weirdo”, but it’s his unique nature that helps them get along so well,

“Dave is a special kind of guy, he’s a weird guy and I love it because his mind is weird and it’s weird like mine.”

Missy Elliot also talked about what her upcoming documentary will be about.

“[Initially] it was supposed to be a trailer for the ‘WTF (Where They From)’ video, and then it just started growing and growing and because then it was like, if we do this trailer for that I want to be able to take people back to the process of ‘The Rain’ (a song off Missy’s debut album Supa Dupa Fly) because there’s an audience who don’t know that Missy is not just an artist, that Missy has produced and written for many big artists since the mid 90s, and was doing this at the same time as being an artist.”

Hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since Missy released her debut album Supa Dupa Fly , but she is very appreciative to her fans for sticking by her,

“I love my fans. I’ve got fans that have been done with me since day one.”

One of those ‘fans’ is former First Lady Michelle Obama. Missy and Michelle teamed up on the female empowerment charity song, ‘This Is For My Girls’ and Missy talked about her admiration for the First Lady,

“Michelle Obama is just fly, but when I met her I really thought that she was going to be ‘First Lady’-like, but she gave me very ‘Aunt-at-my-cookout’ and I love that about her because not only is she smart, she’s cool and so warming. You almost forgot that she was the First Lady.”

Missy also talks about which of today’s artists she likes to listen to, as well as her upcoming recurring role in a Lee Daniels project.
