This is probably the most expensive Beef Patty in history after a lawsuit against a Florida town was settled for $100,000. Wow.

When Ursila Wilson boarded the bus, she was in the hands of a driver whose short history with Broward County Transit was marked with complaints and accidents.

Driver Herton Reid was breaking another rule that day, eating a Jamaican beef patty at the wheel, maneuvering the 15-ton bus with one hand, surveillance video from inside the bus and county records show.

Another passenger was complaining as Wilson boarded, chastising Reid to stop “driving crazy,” Wilson recalled.

It was just a few blocks later that he hit the brakes, and passengers standing in the crowded bus lurched forward. Wilson lost her grip on the overhead bar and plunged, banging her head on the fare box, falling to the floor in pain.

Reid glanced down and kept eating, the video shows.

The spill cost taxpayers $100,000, when Broward County commissioners voted last week to settle Wilson’s lawsuit. Her medical bills exceeded $220,000, the county said. She’d had surgery to fuse disks in her upper spine, said her attorney, Joseph North.

Reid’s files at the county track the six-year career of the 60-year-old, a former truck driver who’d had “some high school” in Jamaica, he wrote on his application.

His first accident was two months after he was hired, when he was still on probation.

“I was just amazed when I saw his employment file,” North said, “that he remained a bus driver as long as he did.”

His case shows a forgiving Broward County transit department, repeatedly warning him that he could be disciplined or fired if things got worse, but meting out little discipline. His troubles were steady:

When he was eventually retrained in response to problems, two county transit instructors rode his bus to observe him. He broke five rules and a passenger was injured while they watched, records show.

He wasn’t disciplined.

“Operator Reid stated that he would do his best to correct the problems,” a memo about the incident says.

Reid left his county job voluntarily in August.

Despite the settlement, Wilson is still upset about how he treated her.

“He was nasty,” she said.

As she lay on the floor, she said, he continued driving and eating the patty. Finally, she said, he asked her coarsely if she wanted him to call an ambulance.

“He never once said, ‘Ma’am, are you OK?’ ” she said.

The settlement comes as the division’s disciplinary system for bus drivers is under scrutiny, and the county auditor, Evan Lukic, prepares a report he expects to release in mid-March.

Lukic said his office was reviewing the history of another county bus driver who drew a lawsuit. That driver, Charles Butler, remained behind the wheel despite hitting 10 cars, losing his driver’s license five times, showing up late and sparking a lawsuit settled by the county for $73,005, the Sun Sentinel reported in January.

A woman is in jail unable to post bail after a bizarre set of circumstances led authorities to track her down – for a petty crime she committed 22 years ago.

Robin Hall, now a married mother of two who designs jet engines, confessed to stealing a pack of cigarettes from a Florida Wal Mart in 1991.

She was arrested Thursday as she, her husband, and two children disembarked from a Disney Dream cruise ship in Port Canaveral, Florida.

Authorities were waiting for Hall, who owes the state a mere $85 in court costs, which they said she failed to pay at the time of the crime.

Police found her, she said, by checking the ship’s manifest for potential terrorists, and finding that she still had an outstanding warrant.

‘I take full responsibility for what I did,’ Hall told NBC Connecticut, but added: ‘I do not believe I deserve this.’

According to WESH.com, the mother has straightened her life out since the 1991 arrest, graduating college with a degree in architecture. She now works for Pratt & Whitney, a jet design firm, in Connecticut.

The network states that Hall is unable to post bail at the Brevard County jail where she is held because the crime was committed in Orange County, and the distraught mother has to be transferred.

‘I just want it to be all over so I can go home,’ she told NBC Connecticut from her holding cell in Brevard County Jail.

Because of the holiday weekend, Hall may be held until next Thursday.

TROY TOWNSHIP, Ill. – Will County Sheriff’s deputies found Daniel W. Bailey, 32, of Mokena walking in the driveway of a home in Troy Township about 4 a.m. after residents called police to report an intruder. Bailey said he’d run out of gas and knocked on the door of the home but went inside when no one answered.

The residents said they awoke to Bailey knocking on a bedroom door and walked out to see him sitting on the stairs playing with their cat. After telling Bailey to get out, the residents found the Christmas tree and other lights had been turned on, candles were lit and the TV turned on in the living room.

“A coffee cake that had been inside a cabinet was [found] half-eaten out on the counter,” a deputy reported.

It also appeared Bailey had played a round of darts on the board in the garage and taken gas caps off the lawn mower and three vehicles.

Bailey reportedly allowed deputies to search his Chevrolet Malibu, which was indeed out of gas.

But inside police found two cans of beer, a can of soda, two frozen dinners, three frozen pizzas, a box of Hot Pockets and a box of mozzarella sticks that had reportedly been taken from the freezer inside. The residents did not claim the two glass marijuana pipes that police found in Bailey’s car.

Bailey, was arrested on charges of residential burglary, vandalism, theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sheriff’s police said Bailey “became irate and combative” while being moved to a holding cell at the jail and was also charged with battery. He is being held on $75,000 bail.

A Tinley Park woman accused of running over her boyfriend with a car after she drove him home from a bar Friday will need to post $10,000 to leave jail.

Christine A. Meyers, 23, picked up her boyfriend from a bar on Friday and began arguing with him, prosecutors said Sunday in Cook County Bond Court. When the couple arrived at the house they share in the 17700 block of South Ridgeland Avenue in Tinley Park, the boyfriend got out of the car and sprawled out on the ground in front of the vehicle. Then, prosecutors say, Meyers drove over him.

Meyers faces an aggravated domestic battery charge after her boyfriend suffered severe burns on his chest and back. The man also suffered burns that tore the skin off his testicles, an injury that required surgery, prosecutors said.

Attorney Tom Ost asked Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. to set Meyers’ bail at $6,000, meaning she would need to post $600 to leave jail.

“Are you serious?” Bourgeois retorted. “You’re asking me to set a bond of $600 for driving over somebody? That is the charge.”

Then the judge set bail at $100,000.

“People argue every day, and they don’t resort to violence,” Bourgeois said.

SPARTANBURG, S.C -

A 22-year-old man is accused of trying to steal a blow up doll, according to an incident report.

Spartanburg police were called to Spencer’s Gifts on Tuesday after someone called about a shoplifter in custody.

Benjamin Greene is charged with shoplifting, according to the Spartanburg County Detention Center website.

A store employee said she saw Greene take a Blow Mylie Doll from the shelf, take the doll out of the box and conceal it in his coat.

The employee said Greene passed all points of sale without trying to pay for it.

The report said the employee stopped him and asked for the doll, and he let the doll fall out of his jacket.

OKLAHOMA CITY – A suspected house burglar was left bloodied and beaten after a fist-fight with the homeowner.

Oklahoma City Police arrested Jonathan Wise, 19, for burglary.

When officers took him into custody, Wise had two black eyes and needed stitches.

Norm Houston, the homeowner, told police he found Wise inside his garage.

“I heard a thumbing noise on my garage door,” Houston said. “I swung open my backdoor and somebody was standing there.”

Houston was face to face with Wise.

According to Oklahoma City Police, that’s when Wise attacked Houston.

“The burglar started out by apologizing to him for getting into the garage and said he had fixed the damage only to follow that up by punching him in the face,”OKC Police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said.

Although he didn’t throw the first punch, Houston beat up Wise.

Houston works as a personal trainer and specializes in boxing and kickboxing.

“You know I ain’t the toughest but I can hold my own,” Houston said.

Houston held Wise down on the ground until police arrived.

Before he was taken to jail, police took Wise to the hospital for treatment.

PALM COAST, Fla. — A Palm Coast man is charged with child neglect after sheriff’s deputies said he left a pit bull to baby-sit a 10-month-old while he went out drinking.

James Irvine, 41, was arrested about 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

According to investigators, the baby’s mother left Irvine in charge while she went to work. The woman told investigators when she got home, Irvine was trying to get in the garage door and admitted he’d been at a bar.

Officials said Irvine told the baby’s mother the baby wasn’t alone, because the pit bull was watching him.

The dog was sitting outside the room, the door was shut and the baby was crying.

The pizza place has introduced it’s pizza scented perfume. It started as a joke online, but when the company saw how many “fans” showed interest in smelling like dinner, they went ahead and created the limited edition line of perfume.

They made 100 bottles and sent them to 100 of their Facebook fans.

It is described as smelling like pizza dough and seasoning.

Based on this strange demand for such a product, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see it expanded and eventually hit retail stores.

We have officially hit rock bottom my friends…

An Albuquerque man arrested for vandalism tried to get out of his charges by offering to turn his own mother into police.

Police say 27-year-old Vaughn Godwin was suspected of selling methamphetamine – or meth.

Police said when they went to go look for him at his apartment they saw walls spray- painted and smashed in.

According to the criminal complaint, Godwin said he destroyed the place because his mother was not giving him money or his medications, and that’s when Godwin told police his mother was selling marijuana out of her home.

Police said by turning his mother in, Godwin had hoped his charges would be dropped. His mom was also arrested.

FLORIDA – If you’re going to steal a phone, you might want to check the settings before you start messing around with it.

A Savannah man charged with burglary was caught after a picture of him showed up on the victim’s Facebook page, according to a Savannah Morning News report.

The victim, a Florida native, told Savannah police that her car had been broken into and two phones stolen on the night of Nov. 21.

Around 3 a.m. on Nov. 22, the victim noticed a photo of someone she did not know on her Facebook page. She told police that one of the stolen phones was programmed to automatically upload photos taken with it to Facebook.

When the photo was turned over to police, a detective assigned to the case thought he recognized the man it depicted as 18-year-old Timothy Jackson, who was currently on probation.

Jackson was arrested and charged with second-degree burglary.
