At the beginning of 2018, Ed Sheeran took to Instagram to share with his *millions* of fans that he and his girlfriend Cherry Seaborn were engaged to be married. “Got myself a fiancé just before new year,” Sheeran wrote. “Our cats are chuffed,” the 27-year-old joked.

All was fine and well into Sheeran was spotted wearing what appeared to be a wedding ring during a pre-BRITs gig on February 19, sending fans into a full-blown tizzy.

If you were one of the fans freaking the F out about the development, don’t fret! The ring on his left hand is an engagement ring, not a wedding ring.

In several interviews on the BRITs red carpet, Sheeran cleared up the rumours, saying, “I never saw why men didn’t wear engagement rings. It’s the same commitment either way. Cherry made it for me herself out of silver clay. I really like it,” in an interview with Dan Wootton.

WHEW. Close call.

While this mix-up was all thanks to the rumour mill, we probably won’t know when he and his wife say “I do” for real, either. In another interview at the BRITs, he said it’ll definitely be a low-key arrangement.

What do you think about m-engagement rings? Should the man put a ring on it, too?
