Halsey is having one hell of a year so far. She’s earned her first number one album on the Billboard Hot 100 List with the release of ‘Hopeless Fountain Kingdom’, and she’ll be hitting Canada in the fall while touring with PartyNextDoor. Though she’s certainly a busy bee, we had the chance to speak with her via phone about all things new music, meeting expectations, and all things sexuality.

On the reception of her new album here in Canada

“Canada has honestly been eating it up, and I owe you big time…. I gotta come and put on the best show I can so that it comes to life even more spectacularly than on record”

Halsey has also never been one to be shy or soft spoken about sexuality and politics, and spoke with Jax about her frustrations with labels and expectations..

“Growing up felt like I just needed to be one thing.. and I didn’t want to be.. For me when it comes to sexuality especially bisexuality, there’s a lot of “you can’t date a woman because you dated a man or vice versa”

“It’s just so dumb that we as a species are so obsessed with categorizing people.. but we do it because it easier to understand.. Ultimately we fear the things we can’t understand.. So anyone we can’t categorize, we fear.. “

Halsey also took a moment to clear up rumours that she had a problem with Demi Lovato’s song “Cool for the Summer” as it potentially exploited bisexuality…

“I’m really fortunate to have Demi as an ally and someone who is with me out here representing bisexuality and women and culture.. We are very much on the same team.. I just want to take an opportunity right now to disprove the idea that I would ever be against her.. because we’re fighting the same fight.”
