Ed stopped by KISS in the UK to perform a cover of Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’; a song that Ed actually wrote.

Ed originally wrote the song for his new album Divide, but then decided to give it to Justin instead.

He told Howard Stern on SiriusXM, “It kind of came at a zeitgeist time for his career, where he had fallen out of grace with the public, and he had this comeback song that was quite grown-up.”

It’s rare for Ed to perform the song and he says there is a very simple reason as to why, “It’s his song, it’s not my song…I’ve written a bunch of songs I don’t sing.”

He added, “To be honest, I’ve only actually played that song once before, so when you guys asked for a cover, I kind of jumped at the opportunity. I like it.”

While the song is on Justin’s Purpose album, Ed also revealed that like his song, ‘Shape Of You’, he had Rihanna in mind for ‘Love Yourself’, “Rihanna could get away with saying ‘you should go and f-ck yourself,’ in my mind anyway.”

‘Love Yourself’ received a Grammy nomination this year for ‘Song of the Year’; Adele’s ‘Hello’ ended up winning.
