When Whitney Kropp was nominated for her school’s homecoming court as a prank, she never expected the outpouring of support she received from her community and the Internet.

As it turned out, the idea to put her on the court was a joke, one she was filled in on after her ascension, and after the boy to be paired with her turned in his own crown so he wouldn’t be seen with her. She was devastated. Lacking the telekinetic powers of Stephen King’s Carrie, Whitney, rather than seek revenge, was merely going to stay home from homecoming.

But it turns out, Whitney had real supporters in her community. On Sept. 14, the day after the school announced Whitney’s place on the Homecoming court, a Facebook page on her behalf was launched. Other students and local businesses rallied behind her, to the point that it’s expected that for the Sept. 28 homecoming game, there will be a stadium full of supporters cheering on a girl whose Homecoming dinner, dress and primping is being covered by others. The boy who didn’t want to walk with Whitney changed his mind, and said his original decision was based on him not wanting to be a part of homecoming at all.
